It's like they're starving hyenas and there's some dead animal carcass lying in the middle of the savanna, with flies all over it, and it's the only meat they might come across for days. Yeah, it's starting to ooze with maggots and whatnot but it's all there is, so better grab it while you can, and fight to the death if necessary for it.
It may even be that once they've had their fill of that diseased flesh, they'll get sick and die anyway, or maybe they'll perish for lack of being able to find a next meal; but they still want it, because it gives them immediate survival and they don't want to see some other animal get what they can't have.
This is basically how it is with the chicks out there that men fight over, trying to be the best white knight or whatever so they'll choose them.
