Irresponsible breeding practices and the obsession with 'racial' purity
I find it a bit disturbing how dog nutters are breeding dogs that struggle to even bread properly only because they want a certain appearance.
One big problem here is that because most dogs are pets who are worse than useless there is very little responsible breeding going on and instead dogs are either mixed (where the outcome is unpredictable) or severely inbred.
For selective breeding to work well it has to be based on good criteria and you also need genetic diversity, therefore you actually need to introduce new genetics to the breed continuously so it can keep getting better instead of getting worse.
Introducing laws against inbreeding could help to prevent inbreeding but it would not solve the problem of pet dogs not being properly bred in general, it would take a long time to turn current pet dogs into something more decent to the point where it's hardly worth the effort.
Another obvious problem with obsession with racial purity is that it can very easily spill over into politics regarding humans, we do not want another holocaust to happen.
Dog owners love to equate their pets to actual working dogs when they have very little in common.
It is also worth noting that a good breed that is optimized for one type of work might not actually be suited as a pet. Terriers for example has intact prey drive and are useful for catching some rodents, not something you want as a pet since the same prey drive could end up being turned on a human child.
What i think we need to do is to simply ban dogs as pets in general and only allow them to professionals who are licensed to handle them and the few who actually has a legitimate usage of a service dog (where the alternative to a dog would be more costly). We can maybe make an exception for sparely populated areas such as at farms.
Or maybe have a dog nutter city where people can enjoy dog shit together (providing they don't have children growing up there).

“This is why we can’t have nice things” applies to dog owners.
They’ve blown it, in my opinion.
The fact that pugs and French bulldogs exist, and the fact that French bulldogs are the “trendy” dog right now says all I need to know about nutters and breeding. They don’t care about the welfare of the dog—they care about how “cute” it looks. It doesn’t matter what a miserable existence the dog itself leads—it’s “cute”. Animal abuse be damned!
That doesn’t touch people who think pitbulls are family dogs/the dog for everyone, or the idiots who think working dogs are happy being locked inside for 23 hours a day. That’s also animal abuse. Or people who think Siberian Huskys and Alaskan Malamutes are appropriate dogs for desert climates. The list goes on and on.
To top it off, you’re seeing mentally deranged people call the shots. Under no circumstance should a dog be euthanized. So what do we do instead if no one wants the dog? We warehouse them for the rest of their lives while the shelter plays on the mentally deranged’s heartstrings. Again, animal abuse.
Until people can get their act together and start treating dogs like animals and not accessories, and stop with unethical breeding practices, keeping improper dogs in improper environments, and shelters are forced to be held accountable for their actions…I’m inclined to agree with you.

Very well said. Dogs have been bred for thousands of years to accomplish all sorts of purposes. So focus on dogs that are going to be docile, easy to care for and can function normally without a host of health problems.
The rest need to be culled from the breeding population altogether.
